Workshop: Optimizing 3D-Assets for Figments.nrw

The University of Wuppertal in collaboration with www.universety.org organized a workshop covering the optimization of 3d assets for realtime applications in Virtual Reality and the Web.

Our recent workshop on GLTF and the optimization of 3D assets brought together a dynamic group of 20 participants, each hailing from diverse backgrounds in higher education and industry. The immersive session delved into key aspects of GLTF, covering everything from core concepts to real-time engine integration.

Workshop Highlights

GLTF Core Concepts: Participants delved into the heart of GLTF, exploring core concepts such as Materials and Textures, and the intriguing world of GLTF Extensions. This segment laid the foundation for a deep understanding of the format and its possibilities.

Optimizing GLTF Assets: Understanding the need for optimized GLTF models, participants engaged in a detailed discussion on the GLTF Optimization Workflow. The journey included manual mesh editing (mostly destructive), fine-tuning textures and materials, and the use of powerful automation and validation tools.

Working with GLTF in Blender: The workshop seamlessly integrated GLTF into the popular 3D modeling tool Blender. Participants explored the intricacies of incorporating GLTF files into Blender, enhancing their workflow and opening up new possibilities for creative expression.

Automation and Validation Tools: A crucial component of the workshop was the exploration of automation and validation tools. Participants got hands-on experience with tools like gltf transform, web viewers, and custom scripts, streamlining their processes and ensuring the integrity of their GLTF assets.

Real-time Engine Integration: The workshop concluded with an exploration of real-time engine integration, using Figments.nrw as an example. Participants gained insights into engine-specific GLTF support (focusing on Unity), unlocking the potential for seamless integration into their respective projects.

Workshop Files and Recording

For those who couldn’t attend or wish to revisit the valuable content, workshop files and a recording of the session will be made available. The files include comprehensive documentation, code snippets, and examples to support participants in applying their newfound knowledge. Whether you’re a student in higher education or a professional in the industry, these resources will serve as a valuable reference as you continue to explore the world of GLTF.

The workshop was held in german. We sadly can not provide an english voice-over or transcriptions.
